Handmade gift tags can be as simple as a rectangle, a hole, and a few thoughtful words. Reused cardstock, a paper shopping bag, or the blank side of an old card can become a coordinated set without purchasing another pack of holiday supplies.
Choose paper with enough body
Select clean cardstock or another paper that will not tear immediately at the hole. Avoid shiny or heavily textured areas if you plan to write with an ordinary pen. Make one sample tag and test your writing before cutting a whole sheet. A slightly larger tag is easier to read and gives room for a personal note.

Cut a repeatable shape
Draw a rectangle about 2 by 3 inches and use it as a guide. Clip the top corners if you like the luggage-tag shape, or keep the edges square for a simpler finish. Punch the hole far enough from the edge that the tie will not tear through when someone lifts the gift.

Add one small decoration
Draw a tiny evergreen branch, stamp a single star, or glue on a scrap of patterned paper. Keep the recipient’s name as the clearest element. Let ink and adhesive dry completely before stacking the tags. Skip glitter and loose embellishments that may rub off on fabric or fall into a food gift.

Write something worth keeping
Add a short shared memory or a sentence explaining why you chose the gift. Use the back if the front is small. Tie the tag with a short reusable ribbon, then keep blank extras with your wrapping supplies. A personal line often makes a bigger impression than a complicated design.
