Felt is a forgiving material for small Christmas ornaments because the edges can remain visible. A rounded heart, mitten, or simple tree is a comfortable starting shape. Work on one sample before cutting a whole collection for the tree.
Choose the shape and size
Draw a shape about 4 inches tall and avoid narrow points on your first attempt. Cut two matching pieces from craft felt, checking the material’s handling instructions. Plan a hanging loop before sewing. A rounded silhouette is easier to stitch neatly and tends to turn out more consistent across several ornaments.

Prepare the thread and loop
Use a manageable length of embroidery thread and a needle suitable for the felt. Fold a short piece of ribbon into a loop and place its cut ends between the two layers near the top. Keep needles, pins, loose ribbon, and small pieces away from young children and pets.

Stitch around the outside
Join the layers with a small running stitch or blanket stitch, leaving a short opening. Add a little clean craft stuffing if you want a padded shape, then close the seam. Keep the filling light so the edges do not pull apart. Check the hanging loop with a gentle tug before using the ornament.

Finish with texture rather than loose pieces
A few embroidered lines can suggest a tree branch or mitten cuff without adding beads or buttons. Do not treat the ornament as a toy. Label the storage box with the year, and keep the paper pattern with spare felt for repairs. Matching shapes can still have slightly different stitches and personalities.
