A mantel is a little stage for the season. A line of greenery, an object with a story, and a soft touch of ribbon can create a Christmas scene without crowding the living room.
Begin with a clean mantel
Remove everyday objects and wipe down the surface. Measure the space and decide how to secure a lightweight garland without damaging the finish. Check the mounting product instructions, especially near heat.

Build a loose line of greenery
Let the garland rest along the mantel or drape gently down one side if it can be secured safely. Add short sprigs in two places for fullness and leave the sections between them lighter. Remove natural greenery as it dries out.

Balance the heights
Use a securely mounted mirror or picture as a backdrop. Place two objects of different heights on one side and a lower piece on the other. Step back to the doorway and check that the arrangement feels balanced alongside the tree.

Finish with one beautiful bow
A generous cranberry ribbon may be all you need. Repeat that color in a few tree ornaments or a throw pillow. You do not have to put matching bows at both ends; a little asymmetry keeps the arrangement relaxed.

Decorating around a working fireplace
Keep every decoration, stocking, cord, and branch outside the clearance distances specified for your fireplace. If the arrangement cannot meet those clearances, decorate a nearby console instead. Turn decorative lights off and unplug them before leaving home.
Complete the room with a traditional Christmas tree and use the home decorating guide to connect the colors and textures.
