A traditional Christmas tree comes together in layers. You do not need to replace a lifetime of ornaments. A thoughtful arrangement of lights and a few repeated materials can bring a collection of memories together beautifully.
Find a comfortable spot
Choose a stable location with enough room to walk past without brushing the branches. Keep the tree away from heat sources and exits. For a fresh tree, follow the supplier’s care instructions and check the water in the stand regularly.

Add the lights first
Inspect the lights and connections before decorating. With the lights off and unplugged, arrange the strands according to the manufacturer’s directions. Check the effect from several viewpoints before adding ornaments so you can correct any dark patches.

Place the larger ornaments
Tuck larger decorations slightly inside the branches for depth. Repeat each main color near the top, middle, and bottom of the tree. Keep delicate keepsakes in secure places where they are unlikely to be knocked off.

Layer in ribbon and family favorites
Use short sections of ribbon to make soft curves between the branches. Then give the most meaningful ornaments a visible place. Handmade fabric ornaments add a gentle texture alongside glass and wood.

Step back before you finish
Take a photograph from across the room. An image makes it easier to notice clumps of color or a crowded section. Remove a piece if the tree feels too full; a little open space lets the favorite ornaments shine.
